review 1: I shouldn't be shocked by how much Bad Science has impacted our everyday food choices (we are all nutritional guinea pigs) but I am. This is a fantastic book about the history of the "healthy" food pyramid and what happens when egotistical medical men of wisdom meet the powerful and rich American food industry powerhouse. In the mean time, millions suffer from the effects of heart disease and obesity. Leaves me in more of a quandry about finding a balance between ethical and healthy eating. This is a must read if you enjoy Ben Goldacre or Omnivores Dilemma etc.
review 2: I would like to start off by saying that I really, really wanted to give this book five stars. The science is SOLID and the logic is flawless. You'll be thinking about causation vs. correlati
... moreon for weeks after you read this. And I cannot believe how many politics are involved in what we eat. The reason I couldn't give this a perfect score is because I felt the conclusion was lacking. By the end of the book, I was convinced that fats were good for me and I was ready to start the process of making them a larger part of my diet. But there are a few problems that arise if we are to make this change on a large scale. And I assumed that Teicholz would offer some suggestions for how we might attempt this. But I was mistaken. Por ejemplo: 1. Meat and animal products are sooo expensive. I don't know if it's because animals are scarce or if it's because the government wants us to eat less meat, but I can't afford to eat a mostly animal diet. So does Ms. Teicholz offer a solution for this problem? Nope.2. Okay, so carbs aren't the best for us. And that probably means they're not the best for animals either. So should we avoid animals that eat high carb (corn) diets? She doesn't say.3. Are pastured-produced eggs better than ones produce in massive chicken factories? *Crickets*Those weren't all the answers I was looking for, but they represent how lacking the conclusion was in solutions. So, as far as showing HOW we can implement a high fat diet and what KIND of animals we should be eating (and, moreover, what the animals should be eating), this book doesn't offer much. She tells you how to get to the party, but she doesn't tell you how to throw it. It is, however, a very, very convincing read. I enjoyed it immensely. less
