review 1: Marcel… or is it Rodrigo is just a moose, a simple moose that does not do a very good job of following the very specific rules laid out by his “owner” Wilfred. From our outside perspective, we readers enjoy seeing how the moose goes about doing his moosey business, eating apples and trotting off wherever he pleases, while Wilfred knows that the moose belongs to him. The words and pictures bounce off each other to form a hilarious story about a boy and “his” moose. Or is it someone else’s moose? This is just the kind of humor kids today get a kick out of and pairing that with the style of the book opens their minds to new ways of creativity. As usual, Jeffers’ characters are fantastically simple and Wilfred and his moose are thickly painted with rich colors. ... moreThe scenes are composed of various realistic paintings of mountainous landscapes or old French line art. Though the characters are pasted onto these beautiful backdrops, they look as though they belong there with the use of shadow and depth. The colors are fabulous, bright or faded, always rich, with splashes of the warmest brown, shiniest red, and limest green. Most of the text is an easy-to-read print, but Jeffers’ distinct handwriting is added in throughout the book in speech bubbles and defining the rules of being a moose owned by Wilfred.
review 2: This was a cute story about a boy, Wilfred, who decided that a moose he found, was his. He named it Marcel and taught it many rules on how to be a good pet. Marcel followed some of the rules well, but never all of them. As they were on a long walk, Wilfred discovered that someone else thought they owned Marcel. As Wilfred walked away, he became entangled in the string he used to find his way home. He laid all tied up and became worried as it got dark. Marcel saved him. Wilfred agreed that Marcel could follow the rules whenever he wanted. less
