review 1: I liked the book . But my four year old daughter does not seem to like the fact that the uncle/dad went missing . She disapproved of this book, and my 7 year old niece was also not very much impressed with the book . Wouldnt recommend for any kid unless you would want to test them with the thought of living without someone whom they love. And ya , I had to point out that the chair was empty .. dont think kids realise that.
review 2: Anyone who is unsure about the meaning of this picture book should take a look at the endpapers, filled with sketches of a child and her father (or more likely, her grandfather). The story itself celebrates the bond between two family members, one young and one much older, but both filled with curiosity and the love for life. Lo
... moresing him is so devastating that she goes to great lengths to protect her heart from future pain. For a long time, she seals herself away from any emotions at all. It takes another young girl, perhaps a lot like she once was, to restore her heart. I found this picture book quite touching and memorable because of the truths about emotions that it tells. I've often pondered how hard it is to remain open to affection and the world after a great loss. This book shows that time often does heal those broken hearts we have and that walling ourselves away isn't the solution to our pain. Not only did I love the book's message and text, but the illustrations were pretty amazing, created from watercolor, gouache, acrylic, house paint, and some "bits from old books" (unpaged). This one is definitely a book to keep. less
