review 1: I stopped reading it halfway. It was disappointing, despite the good reviews on amazon. Worst Chinese historical fiction, written by a white man Geoffry Morgan Pike. Can't expect much from this book, it starts by focusing a lot on Chinese culture and rituals jammed into a book and that all Chinese men are perverts/rapist. Not to mention that western men are angels from heaven, because they're so kind and wonderful. The book is unrealistic, it doesn't fall into history context. The writing is flat, can't feel any sympathy for Li Xia . It's written based on his views, his imagination. He didn't put enough effort into research, Probably thinking he'd easily get away with it. The book is a waste of money and time. There are better books out there like Empress Orchid, Peony in ... moreLove, Memoirs of a geisha.
review 2: A very interesting and heartbreaking, at times, story of a girl whose mother was a concubine, but the mother doesn't want her daughter to become one. So, this is a story of the daughter's life and how she escapes becoming a concubine. It is also a story of her daughter and her life as well. Wonderful book that ties in the colorful traditions of Chinese culture and life during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century up to World War II. less
