review 1: The narrative moved pretty well for a fiction work. Although the book was tagged as being the love story of Rachel and Andrew Jackson, most of it was about Andrew Jackson, since it was he who took the stage in American history. It did give a genealogy of Rachel and her family growing up in the Tennessee Territory. Andrew came to town as a young lawyer and boarded with Rachel's family. Rachel had been married to a jealous and controlling husband prior to Andrew. She divorced the first husband and eloped with Andrew. He grew to prominence in the war of 1812. Rachel always wanted to be at home where as Andrew felt a need to serve his country. Just weeks before Andrew left Nashville to take his position as president of the United States, Rachel died of a heart at... moretack.
review 2: I enjoyed learning more about our country's history through the story of one of its most illustrious leaders; reading about his love of his wife helped to put flesh on the bones of the dry history I'd learned in school. I could identify with Rachel's contentment in being a homebody, as well; there is a certain joy to providing comfort and welcome to others. I would recommend this book as a supplement to regular historical accounts, as it helps personalize and illustrate the individuals beyond the more well-known facts of their lives. less

It was a fast read, and I enjoyed it, but not as much as I did 'American Lion.'
