review 1: Kid has troubles. Kid gets pet with quirks. Pet acts as catalyst for growth in kid's life. Is this a unique formula? Not at all -- but there's a reason it's consistently repeated, and this book is the best version of it that I've ever read. Wonderful voices and a light, deft thematic hand take it beyond the standard trope to something truly special. It's probably a 4.5 instead of a 5, but I'm feeling warm and fuzzy. Highly recommended.
review 2: A and I are reading this book for the next parent/child book club. I just finished the book, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. The parents were a bit hard to take, and I wished the family in the book could communicate better - but what really cracked me up is the kid complaining about his dad making lists (and h... moreaving a list type of personality), when the book is filled with lists that the kid made. That, is classic, imo. less
