review 1: This was a fascinating book about the world of surgeons. I found the author to be likeable and his stories about patients and his experience were both inspiring, shocking and sometimes very helpful. He gives you many tips on what you should ask of your surgeon (and anesthesiologist) before you go into surgery including credentials and their success rate on certain procedures. I thought this book was very helpful in that sense and given the topic and some of the horror stories, it has not made me any less likely to get a surgical operation if necessary. Finding the right surgeon is another problem altogether though.
review 2: After a lengthy and disquieting discussion of the many problems with the life of a general surgeon, I expected Dr. Ruggieri might conclude
... more with a glimmer of hope about the future of his profession. Not so. Jeez.Although it would behoove anyone genuinely interested in general surgery to get a second (and third) opinion before embarking on a journey through a surgical residency program, the author certainly didn't do much with this discouraging work to alleviate the impending surgeon shortage he laments. less
