Koven Chronicles is a great new series and a spin off from Mosaic Chronicles (formerly known as Katon University). The series follow Lizzie, a character from Mosaic Chronicles (which I haven’t read yet but will now), who is an Arete (which is explained in the book) and has an ability to control fire, which she uses to help law enforcement.
This was a very interesting and fast paced story with a quite unusual approach to vampires, paranormal and magic. It is well written with a nice sequence of events. The author describes the necessary in order to create atmosphere but leaves out the unnecessary, which adds more to the fast pace. For example, there will be a thorough description of how the main character dealt with her affliction upon arrival home, which leaves you feeling it in your bones. On the other hand, there will be one paragraph where the characters set up an appointment for the next day and in the next, you are immediately there, present at their meeting. This was quite unusual and quite enjoyable change from most of the other books. And as I said, it adds to the fast pace of the story, which kept me on edge from the first to the last page.
The main character Lizzie is an independent, strong and magical character. She controls fire and helps the local and regional authorities in saving lives, which she undercharges regardless of constant reminders from even her clients and colleagues. This also says something about her character, she is modest without a greedy bone in her body. She is also brave and does not shy from danger if it means that she can help save someone.
Abel is a mysterious character from her past and she reluctantly joins forces with him to fight the evil. There are several side characters, but apart from Cole and Alexander, none of them really stand out. There is also a cameo appearance of Nicole from Mosaic Chronicles.
It was a very enjoyable read and I am looking forward to exploring Mosaic Chronicles and reading the next book in this series.
