review 1: It is always good to have a peep into 60s and 70s, though I have never experienced those times by myself (I'm in twenties). In this memoir the famous novelist Paul Auster frankly divulges his innermost part of the youthful days. As a reader of his novels and essays, I think I could understand more of his other works after referring to the materials (or let me say data) from this book, as his experiences from youth, especially those from anti-war movements and protests in 60s, might have acted unconsciously as a basis of his future literary career.
review 2: It was nice to learn more about the personal history of one of my favorite writers. Especially the beginning, with the description of Auster's childhood, was a very nice read. Though the letters he writes to... more his sweetheart when he is in his early twenties are interesting mostly because of how over the top they are (look at me being an amazing writer!), the book contained few too many of these letters to retain my interest. All in all it's Auster's amazing way with words, the flow of the book, which makes reading on irresistible. less
