review 1: Auster's second memoir was interesting, if a bit weird. Who writes a memoir in second person? I am sure, knowing the profound nature of his novels, that Auster has a reason, but it was distracting to me. Frankly, the last third was the most interesting. Auster compares writing to dance, and both of them to expressions of the heart rhythm. Love that part of it! Auster is one of my favorite authors, but this fell short of my expectations.
review 2: I don't like Paul Auster's style usually (apart from Smoke and Blue in the Face)but I liked this plenty. At 64, Auster is musing through his life via the body that has carried him this far. It is quite beautiful, nostalgic, but containedly so and familiar somehow. It only gets unbearable in one part where he laud
... mores the wittiness of his wife's Housing association minutes and reproduces perhaps three pages of them. It made me think of a Kingsley Amis line which goes "she looked so beautiful in her white dress and white hair-band that Churchill had an instant of sincere puzzlement at the way passers-by went on passing by" ...But that's pretty cute, right? Being that delighted with your spouse. So I sound like the grinch. This is a comforting and cosy read, full of life and loveliness. less

Auster's memoirs are written in a bit different way taht usual autobigraphies. Written in second person, they give you a different perspective over his life. Quite honest. But I couldn't get rid of a feeling that he had a lack of ideas for another novel and he wrote this. Not bad writting, not at all, but still... On the other hand, it does give you a closer look on his personality and maybe better understanding of his previous books. Interesting, nonetheless.

Enjoyable, although I assume only of interest to Austerholics like me.
