review 1: I don't know why I like reading books (and watching documentaries) about the work of physicians. I remember aspiring to be a doctor for many years as a youngster: the "helping people" part spoke to me, as well as the opportunity physicians have to use their classroom-learned knowledge (and eventually, their own experience) to treat every unique individual and case (which is also a creativity-thing). In any case, Dr. Paul Austin possesses another talent: writing. In Something for the Pain, Austin shares the story of how he came to be an ER doctor, the unique and interesting cases he has had the opportunity to be a part of, a peek at the people who work with him, and how his wife and children play an important supporting role in his life and career, as the two are typically ... moretightly intertwined. Highly readable, Austin kept my interest from beginning to end.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. It's not an ER fast-paced horror show. It's the author's personal journey with becoming a physician and also how that affects his wife and family. The long hours of an intern are draining and Austin struggles to find ways to care for himself, as well as patients, and his family. It's a journey many of us can relate to- how to have a family, work full time and still fit in time for self care, and yet few of us have the demanding job of an ER doc. Recommended! less
