review 1: I really enjoyed this book. The story telling was excellent. The imagery was excellent as well. I also really liked how he used historical backdrop from various naturalists to frame his story and place better perspective. The only reason that I don't give this 5 stars is that at times Rosolie was a bit preachy. I think he got the importance of saving the environment to the reader through his stories and didn't really need to explicitly state some of the principles of conservation.
review 2: I read it in 2 days flat. Rosalie's adventures -especially his solo adventures- into little-known Amazon tributaries rank up there with the best tales from explorers that I've ever read, bringing to mind people like Frank Kingdon-Ward, Alan Rabinowitz, and Henri Mouhot. I'll
... more never be able to shake the image of him diving into the river and swimming out to climb up on a fast-moving log so that he could surf it down river in order to get closer to civilization, or hearing and feeling a jaguar breathing in his ear, or kayaking out of the "lost world" with uncontacted tribes very possibly on his tail -and rafting right over a large black caiman during his escape. These are just a few scenes that come to mind. Rosalie is also a strong voice for conservation, and his dedication and passion shine throughout. less
