review 1: I have never read any of Ernest Hemingway's work and I didn't know anything about his personal life. after the first 20 pages I quickly looked at his Wikipedia page to get an idea of his life. I do believe that he and Hadley had an interesting life but this book doesn't do it justice. The book was interesting enough for me to finish but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it. I realize the author used time appropriate slang but it was hard for me to follow, and Hadley was basically a lovesick schoolgirl who did anything Ernest wanted. I suppose women were expected to be that way back then but it's hard to believe and harder to read about. There was only really one exiting part and that didn't happen until the end if the book. I think I bought into the hype about this book, and becaus... moree of that I was let down.
review 2: I am torn on how to rate this book. I spent much of this book intensely disliking Ernest Hemingway and thinking his wife Hadley was way too weak. I started to dislike her as well. However, as the characters developed, they started to hit home for me a really too closely and I realized that's what was making me so uncomfortable. Though Hemingway and Hadley lived in different eras and moved in vastly different circles than I did in my youth, the beauty of literature is that it allows us to see pieces of ourselves in the stories. Everything we feel or experience has been felt by another human in other places and times. In a way, fiction helps us realize no one has to suffer alone. I still dislike Hemingway, but I've made peace with Hadley and am happy she found a happy ending. less

I loved the Hemmingway insight! It makes the movie "Midnight in Paris" come to life!

A great light read. Wouldn't recommend this for everyone.

Hadley is a whiney and needy. I could not stand her.
