review 1: Warren Spooner, Jr. is a lifelong, incorrigible screw-up whose father dies when he is young; however, he has the fortune of becoming the stepson of the greatest man he will ever know. As Spooner the thick-headed vandal grows into a man who sets his own course of faux pas and poor judgements, he is loved throughout his life by his aptly-named stepfather Calmer. Pete Dexter's SPOONER is a tender, masculine story that the author asserts is somewhat autobiographical but the strong prose sets Dexter in the company of such under-appreciated novelist as Percival Everett, J. Robert Lennon, Lewis Nordan, Charles Portis, Scott Spencer and John Welter.
review 2: This is one you really, truly have to read for yourself before you can judge it. The opening page left me conc
... moreerned that if Dexter's long, convoluted style dragged on throughout, I might never survive to the final page. I don't know if I just became accustomed to his style, or if I realized it was like having a glimpse into the way the characters rambled in his/her own heads, but Dexter's style grew on me. Also, there were admitted times I wasn't sure where he was going with the story or if it was ever going to make sense at that end, but perseverance in this one pays off. I also realized how much more I got from the book than I initially thought when I talked with others who read it. It's worth a read. I also recommend reading the author acknowledgments at the end. It also furthers that glimpse into his mind. less
