review 1: The author should really have read "Our Sea of Islands" by Epeli Hauʻofa in order to find new ways to talk about Micronesia besides small, a backwater, and historically insignificant. Or maybe Paul D'Arcy in his "People of the Sea". Though I know he would hate to admit it and in fact he seems to struggle against it in parts, his perspective it very land centered and sometimes pejorative even if unintentional.
review 2: At the age of 21, Peter Rudiak-Gould spent a year teaching English to children on the small atoll of Ujae, part of the Marshall Islands. He chose to teach at this remote outpost, thinking he could remove himself from his own culture and immerse himself in the "paradise" of an island culture far removed from America. He learns that he is wr... moreong on all counts - that one can never completely remove oneself from one's native culture and that paradise doesn't exist. Rudiak-Gould is insightful, funny and honest and avoids easy cliches of culture shock in this book. less
