After reading The Hating Game by Sally Thorne a while back, I’ve been searching for a book that was similar to the hate-to-love, office romance plot, and I found it! Well, to be honest it wasn’t as great as The Hating Game (that was just pure perfection) but it was still a good, entertaining read!
So let me explain the plot a little bit. We have our two main characters Payton Kendall and J.D Jameson who are both top lawyers. After eight years, they find themselves in a competition for the partnership position at their firm. Both J.D and Payton are incredible in their respective fields and they’ve both been working towards this position. Not only are they competing for the partnership position but they are both assigned the same lawsuit, forcing them to work and spend more time together… and so the fun part begins.
I absolutely love hate-to-love romances and the hilarious banter that comes with it! There are some really great one-liners in this book and a lot of laugh out loud moments! The slow burn romance between Payton and J.D and seeing them slowly realise their feelings for one another was so adorable!
Payton was such a strong, fierce character. She’s a feminist who didn’t take crap from anyone (especially J.D). My all time favourite scene was in the courthouse when J.D sabotaged her! Lets just say Payton was put in a really embarrassing situation that would’ve left anyone turning bright red and running out of the room (I certainly would have!) but Payton handled it like a pro! She just laughed it off…laughed I tell you! Payton was truly an admirable character!
J.D, to be honest, annoyed me a little in the beginning. He was a bit of a sexist asshat (excuse my French) but he eventually grew on me as his personality developed over the book. In the end, when he realised his deep feelings for Payton he was really just a big sweetheart who would do anything for Payton.
I also loved the secondary characters, such as Payton’s mum, Lex Kendall (she was hilarious and the total opposite of Payton!). I also loved J.D’s best friend, Tyler. He gave great advice to J.D when he was struggling to express his feelings for Payton AND he showed J.D how his situation with Payton was similar to Lizzie and Mr Darcy’s in Pride & Prejudice. He explained the story of it (having read the book himself) and gave J.D tips on what Mr Darcy did to win Lizzie’s heart…suffice it to say, Tyler was a pretty swoon-worthy book boyfriend himself!
All in all, if you love a good hate-to-love office romance book filled with witty banter, sexual tension and a slow-burn romance between the hero and heroine, then this book is for you!
