review 1: I usually don't care what famous people have to say. But a friend gave this to me, so I read it.The author's philosophy is simple: love God and love your neighbor. As a Christian I thoroughly agree with this approach. His chapters on faith are Biblically sound and straight to the point. He believes that the Bible is literally God's Word, and a lot of his comments are paraphrases from the Bible. His chapters on current events and America's problems are interesting. Some of his conclusions are obvious, even though politicians are blind to them. For example, it doesn't make sense for us to give aid to countries that don't like us, and we shouldn't be comfortable with people expecting handouts from the government. Honest people should work for a living. Wasn't that what most of... more us were taught as children?Other chapters are either too short or oversimplified. For example, he says that if he was in charge, he'd cut funding to government agencies by 50 to 75 percent. In particular, he doesn't see a need for federal law enforcement. But who would pay for cases when criminals cross state borders? In my opinion it is not reasonable to say "slash the budget" unless you can back your proposal up with details. Also, I was surprised to read him talk about lotteries and how money can't buy happiness. Granted, this is an obvious Christian position, but I've also seen the author's face on a Louisiana lottery advertisement. (If you don't believe me, search for "Duck Dynasty Louisiana lottery" and you'll find it.) It is possible that the Duck Dynasty lottery items weren't made with his family's approval, but something just doesn't sit well with me about this. This was a quick read. I can see how Christians and Duck Dynasty fans will love it and a lot of other people will avoid it.
review 2: When my wife saw this book on our couch with the patriarch of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson and his bushy beard on the cover she exclaimed, "Malin, please read this book as soon as possible, so visitors don't see it."I did as she requested and read unPHILtered in a few days with a mild grimace the whole time as if yes,.... Phil I really agree with (We owe 1.3 trillion to China and 1.1 trillion to Japan...We are a superpower with a third world check-book)....to alternating oh No Phil you didn't just say that (Its harder to get a license to shoot a duck than it is to get an abortion). Phil and Mrs. Kay haven't changed much despite their success on duck dynasty. They still live on the Ouchita river in a expanded double wide. Shooting ducks makes him Happy, Happy, Happy. Making a better Duck call is his life calling JACK. 4 stars. I don't feel the need to get into his views on gun control, religion, government, race, or eating squirrels. I think this shows I will read most anything. less
