Murder at the Brightwell – Characters

SPOILERS!!!

I will list the characters of this novel for further reference when I get to read the next instalment:

  • Amory Ames is the main character. She is twenty-six and is married to Milo Ames, who has a reputation as a philanderer. The story between Amory and Milo hasn’t been easy. She was engaged to marry Gilmore Trent, but when she met Milo at a party, she ditched Gil and married Milo. What started off as a romantic dream turned out to be a disappointment as Milo neglected her and was away most of the time, and there were many rumours about his conquests. At the end of the book the married couple have reached an understanding and are happy together again. Amory also has a best friend, Laurel, who is also her cousin.
  • Milo Ames is Amory’s husband and a bit of a womanizer. Whether his reputation is true or not is not clear. I find Milo charming and funny. I didn’t like him at first, but he really got me over.
  • Grimes is Amory’s butler.
  • Laurel is Amory’s best friend and cousin
  • Gilmore Trent is Amory’s ex-fiancé. She left him to marry Milo. Gil is a bit too passive for my taste. At the end of this book we understand he might marry Olive Henderson who he had a relationship with a few months ago.
  • Emmeline Trent is Gil’s sister. She is a sweet, romantic girl, and in this book she is heartbroken as the man who she was to marry is killed.
  • Rupert Howe is the victim of the first murder in this novel. He is engaged to Emmeline Trent. Emmeline’s brother doesn’t approve of the engagement and tries to buy him off. For that reason, Gil is first arrested as the main suspect
  • Yvonne Roland is a widowed woman who writes in a gossip column
  • Olive Henderson is the daughter of a very wealthy man. She had a relationship with Gil, and when he broke it off with her, she was so miserable that she tried to commit suicide. In the end it appears that Olive and Gil might become a couple again.
  • Edward and Anne Rodgers is one of the married couples staying in the hotel. Edward is a solicitor, and Anne is an attractive woman.
  • Nelson and Larissa Hamilton is the second married couple in the hotel. Nelson is a despicable man who treats his wife horribly. He is killed, and we learn that his wife murdered him. Larissa appears to be shy and mousy, but we learn later that she is not the weak person she is. The woman is duplicitous, and killed Rupert and her husband, and she also tried to kill Amory.
  • Lionel Blake is an actor. The reason why he was so secretive towards Amory is because he is actually German, and that is why he doesn’t like to be in the limelight. After the Great War, being German was considered a shame.
  • Veronica Carter is another wealthy woman who was after Milo, and that is the reason why she changed Amory’s aspirins for sleeping pills. He wanted to seduce Milo and thought that getting Amory out of the way, it would be easier.
