review 1: This was a cute book filled with short stories from a woman raising 5 boys. While much of it was just stories of "this is what crazy thing my kids did that day" there were a few good ideas/pointers/insights into the life of raising a boy. I even found a few things that struck me, such as this gem:"I can tell you how you must have high standards for your boys, with the understanding that you might never reach perfection. What a challenge to be a woman, with a woman's feelings and ideals, working to raise tomorrow's men - men who will be manly and strong and also respectful."I didn't really relate to the author herself. She seemed to remove herself from the book at times and at others interject her vast difference to the male (and in a way, myself); reading comics, being ram... morebunctious, wanting to go out and get dirty... Also, there is quite a bit of religious talk. I wasn't offended, I'm not that kind of person, but I just wasn't expecting so much of it. All in all a good, funny, quick read. I appreciated that the stories were short - that definitely made it easier to be able to put the book down when necessary.
review 2: Meh - I wasn't crazy about this book...While I enjoyed some of the stories, I felt like they were disjointed and not well planned. I almost felt like the author was some fictional character who was just talking about her fictional family. I didn't really feel like I got to know her or her family at all.I did enjoy some of the stories and antidotes about her rambunctious boys, but almost felt like the author was standing at a distance from her own family when writing about them. I would have liked the book to have had a few more personal touches. Oh, and flowed better.I have been reading a lot of parenting books lately - and humorous books on parenting - probably because I am now said parent and would like to know what I am doing wrong (haha). But this one just didn't grab my attention like some of the others have. It left me wanting more substance. less
