review 1: It is rare for me to find a story that I cannot put down. The Next is one of those books. Written in the first person point of view, we never learn the name of the main character. Not my usual MO, as I like to see inside the other characters’ heads just a little bit. Let me say Haze did an amazing job of sticking to first person point of view. The main character is agoraphobic, depressed, and suffers from PTSD. The first few pages of the book were so glum and depressing I honestly debated giving up. After all, this character cared nothing for himself, why should I invest my time in him? I am so happy I decided to press on.Throughout the story, we hop back and forth between the present, where the reclusive main character watches the world from his window, where he gets ca... moreught up in a couple of suspicious disappearances, and a horrific past, filled with traumatic experiences. Throw into the story a drool-worthy detective with suspicious motives, and you have the recipe for a fantastic tale.Rafe Haze does a great job with the flashbacks, intertwining the present and the past. So great, in fact, at times it was excruciatingly, deliciously, frustrating. He dangles the carrot until you almost have it, then, BAM, you are in another part of the story, and the carrot is gone. Oh, you’ll get the carrot eventually. But you’re going to have to work for it. The Next is not a light story. There are no butterflies and clover fields. Still, I had a fun time reading the book, and can’t wait to read more from this author.
review 2: This book was shattering to me. The voice of the narrator was heartbreaking and snarky. At first I thought I missed his name. I reread it searching it. He never reveals his name. It was a powerful move on the author’s part. The Narrator was on a slide to killing himself. It was hard watching him slowly loose himself as he waited for the next to happen. I liked how he was not cured overnight. I hope the author revisits this couple in the future. less

I'm confused, how can a book that was published -not so long ago-"often be called" anything?
