review 1: Giordan Stone doesn't know much about his life when he wakes from his coma. He doesn't know why Chloe Devereaux, who he is told is no relation to him - cares for him, shelters him, acts as a playfully-abusive southern parent, and fulltime physical therapist. He is sure her home is familiar. He is sure he feels himself while painting the landscapes of her estate. He is sure there is more to his past when he sees her son Shane.Shane was his first flicker of memory, and rightness, but Shane seems to detest the very sight of him. As time passes, Giordan has fragments of memory return - mostly happy times with Shane. Though Shane keeps his distance, Giordan is determined to uncover the whole story and find his way home to Shane. This is a tale of young love suspended by time and ... moretragedy, with just enough longing to deliver a deeply satisfying conclusion.
review 2: Raine O’Tierney is an artist, or maybe, I would better brand her as a craftsperson. I compare O’Tierney’s novella, Sweet Giordan, Please Remember, to a finely honed work of literary sculpture, one that fuses charming and genteel Southern society, the frustrating mystery of unanswered questions, and an undeniable shadow of fiercely treasured past love, into a soft-edged, silky, and sinuous work of art.In the way that a skilled craftsperson judiciously chooses her tools, each word in O’Tierney’s novella has been carefully selected. Every image artfully depicted, each character meticulously constructed, every line of dialogue perfectly fitting and cleverly fashioned. If you will allow me to mix metaphors, I will suggest that in this same gentle manner, the story’s pace is never rushed, but instead is given freedom to flow like a lazy river to its eventual conclusion. I loved the wandering twists and turns of Sweet Giordan’s plot, along with the wondering, the hopefulness, and the gentle foiling of deep desires experienced by the main character, Giordan Stone as I floated along with the clever storyline. As a final piece of commentary I will say that at the conclusion of Sweet Giordan, Please Remember, I am left with a sense of satisfied completion, unlike the way I often feel when I finish a reading a novella. My typical reaction is to wonder why this novella wasn’t a novel—why was it so brief? But Sweet Giordan is a true novella. It is meant to be a novella. It is at its intended length, and it shows.I so appreciate literary works that remind me of this truth: writing in itself is an act of creativity, a making of art. Sweet Giordan, Please Remember is one of these sorts of novels, where you experience a cleverly crafted story as you tread water in a river of artistic ingenuity. *received review copy for honest review less
