review 1: Saving Zasha is a book that caught my attention. When Mrs. Oducayen shared what the book was about on a Wedsnday during the last ten minutes of homeroom, I was really interested in reading it. After reading Finding Zasha, I was so interested in reading the sequel. Even though Ivan (from Finding Zasha) never finds Petr and Zasha, Saving Zasha tells a good story about Mikhail's, Nikolai's, Rina's, and their mom's love for Zasha. Mikhail's family tries their best to keep the men in the yellow truck, Dimitri, a man that is trying to breed a Russian Superdog, and Katia, Mikhail's enemy, from taking Zasha. And at the end, Rina finds a secret about Katia that explains why Katia wants the dog, which I will not tell because it basically surprises you when you find out what it is, a... morend I don't want to be a spoiler.Saving Zasha and Finding Zasha are really good books that explain a lot about World War II and what happened afterwards. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
review 2: In 1945 Russia, 13-year-old Mikhail finds Zasha, a German shepherd, in the woods near his home. With anti-German sentiment running high, can Mikhail keep Zasha safe from those who believe that owning a German shepherd is traitorous?I found the premise and the history behind this novel to be intriguing but was disappointed with the author's execution of this tale. The first-person narrative just didn't ring true to me; I simply wasn't convinced that a 13-year-old boy was telling this story. The conflict also felt a bit too conveniently resolved, and some of the dialogue and characterization struck me as a little trite. While keen adults won't be surprised by the plot and the conclusion of "Saving Zasha," kids who are drawn to animals, curious about WWII, and ready for chapter books may appreciate this story. less
