I’d like to share not one, but two diaries about hapless heroes in sorrowful situations.
The Long-Lost Diary of the World’s Worst Knight
Sir Roderick is a squire at Doddington Castle and longs to be a brave knight. The kind of knight who’ll be remembered in heroic tales like King Arthur’s knights of the round table. However, this seems unlikely while his main duties involve scraping pigeon poo and washing pots.
Finally, Sir Roderick is given the chance to train to be a knight, but, predictably, things don’t go entirely to plan. Particularly when his local rivals, the Froddington Knights start causing trouble.
The Long-Lost Diary of the World’s Worst Pirate
Thomas and his parents are travelling in luxury aboard a merchant ship to the Caribbean port of Kingston. Thomas is longing for excitement and dreams of meeting some real life Pirates.
His dream comes true when the boat is boarded by a gang of blood-thirsty brigands who’ve abandoned their own sinking vessel. Thomas soon finds out exactly what it’s like being marooned on a desert island – boring! Will he ever find his way back to his parents?
My son (aged almost 8 at the time) read both these books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Inside, there’s a real mix of diary entries, illustrations and fact boxes which kept him engaged and taught him a few things along the way. Although easy to read, the vocabulary is great and the plot lines engaging – excellent reads for developing readers.
