The livestock of Abram and Lot grew so much that their workers fought with one another. Abram proposed a solution,
“Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.” And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar. Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other (Genesis 13.9–11).
Lot chose with himself in mind. That led to disastrous results later, for he found out that while the land was beautiful the hearts of the people living there were ugly.
Choosing the way of honor may not benefit you at the first, but later you will do better than if you had not chosen honor. Thinking of others first and then yourself will do the same thing. Initially, you might not gain, but later you will. Those who think only of themselves will gain at the first, but later they will pay a heavy price.
Questions:
- What would you have done if you were in Lot’s place?
- How is it that Abram chose the way of honor?
