DiPucchio, Kelly. Everyone Loves Cupcake. Illustrated by Eric Wight. Farrar Straus Giroux, 2016. $17.99. ISBN 9780374302931. Unpaged. Ages 4-7. P9 Q10
Cupcake does everything she can do to impress others. At first, everyone loves Cupcake. Cupcake feels that she needs to keep earning the other pastries’ approval, so she tries extra hard to be perfect. The other pastries get tired of her talking about how perfect things are. Nobody wants to spend time with her. Finally, Cookie offers her advice on being true to herself and Cupcake shares her true feelings. That encourages the other pastries to share their true feelings and they end up loving Cupcake again.
Verdict: This is a cute story with beautiful illustrations. The story has food humor and puns in it. The donut has a hole in it and the croissant is flaky. I recommend this book for elementary and classroom libraries. This is an excellent book for character education. The moral of the story is that you do not have to be perfect. Others will appreciate you being who you are and sharing your true feelings.
