Down the TBR Hole is a weekly meme hosted by Lost In A Story.
Most of you probably know this feeling, your Goodreads TBR pile keeps growing and growing and it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You keep adding, but you add more than you actually read. And then when you’re scrolling through your list, you realise that you have no idea what half the books are about and why you added them. Well, that’s going to change!
- Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
This came up on my feed this week when I saw someone I followed posting theirs and I realised just how much I needed to take part because my TBR is ridiculous. I’m starting from the very beginning and we might be here a while so look out for this every week!
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern | 18th February 2013
I think I added this to my TBR when my English Lit teacher had just finished it when it came out and was gushing. Despite all the hype and high regard around this book, I’ve still never picked it up, but I do still want to.
Verdict: KEEP.
The Cuckoo’s Calling (Cormoran Strike #1) by Robert Galbraith | 14th July 2013
Obviously, I added this to my TBR as soon as I found out about its release and JKR was known to be the author. However, I never got around to reading the series despite owning both some paperbacks and all ebooks. I loved the BBC adaptation on TV last month though so I’ll definitely get to it.
Verdict: KEEP.
And The Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini | 14th May 2014
My dad bought me the ebook of this upon it’s release due to my absolute adoration of both The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, however, I get the feeling I won’t be in the right ‘mood’ for this for some time. But, I do own it…
Verdict: The Backburner.
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson | 14th May 2014
I feel like everyone has a period of time when they want to read as many ‘classics’ as possible and this found its way onto my TBR around then for me. I doubt I will ever get around to reading it.
Verdict: Bye, bye.
Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta | 30th May 2014
I added this after I read Marchetta’s On the Jellicoe Road and was crazily affected by it. I’ve not been big on YA Contemporary in ages but again, I own a copy so I feel like I’ll get to it one day.
Verdict: The Backburner.
I am Number Four (Lorien Legacies #1) by Pittacus Lore | 30th May 2014
I honestly can’t remember why I added this. It’s true that I’ve always been fond of books like this but tbh I won’t pick it up now.
Verdict: Bye, bye.
Beautiful Creatures (Caster Chronicles #1) by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl | 30th May 2014
Admittedly this book ticks all the boxes, but now I think I’ve heard so many average reviews of this and I just can’t be bothered. There are so many like this that I’ll probably enjoy more.
Verdict: Bye. bye.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett | 4th June 2014
Even though it’s been three years since I added it and I still haven’t read it, I’m still of the belief that this book is incredibly important and I will one day get around to it.
Verdict: KEEP.
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger | 4th June 2014
I really do still like the sound of this, but I honestly don’t think it will ever be a priority…
Verdict: The Backburner.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky | 4th June 2014
I’m so torn because everyone I know (and every single one of my goodreads friends) raves about this and 5*s it, but I just can’t be bothered. On the flip side, I know it’s short and could probably read it in a few hours…
Verdict: The Backburner.
Uglies (Uglies #1) by Scott Westerfeld | 4th June 2014
Admittedly, this does still sound good and like something I’d read but I feel like the time has passed. Maybe one day, but for now it’s a no.
Verdict: Bye, bye.
Harry: A History by Melissa Anelli | 31st July 2014
As a forever HP nerd, I will most definitely read this one day and I refuse to remove it from my TBR because it will happen.
Verdict: KEEP.

Keep: 4 | The Backburner: 4 | Bye, bye: 4
