Each new Star Wars story gives insight into the nature of The Force. So what is it exactly?
The Force is the part of Star Wars that offers larger-than-life power as well as define a motivation for the central characters. It describes characters as good and evil. It defines them as more… ambiguous. It is the essence of the Force that differentiates Star Wars from other mythos-driven narratives (Harry Potter; Kung Fu; Star Trek).

But we don’t quite understand it. That’s probably a good thing. But we do know a bit about it. Most of what we know of the Force can be taken from a sprinkling of quotes from various characters.
Let’s look at a few.
It’s nature
What is the nature of the Force? What does it do? How do we interact with it? What is it made out of?
Life Creates it. Makes it grow. ~ Yoda
It surrounds us. Combines us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. ~ Yoda

The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force. ~ Darth Vader
Responsibility
Though the Force is created by life, only few have access to use it. With this power comes ambition and responsibility. Those that wield the Force think about this power differently.
A Jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense. Never for attack. ~ Yoda

The Dark Side & The LIght
Over the years we have seen the Force in terms of the dark side and the light. Though in more recent years we have encountered those who may not strictly fall into these categories, but still according to some dynamic of them.
There continues, though, a constant conflict between the dark and the light. We’re just not sure that this conflict is harmful or the natural order of things.

The Force is one of the most interesting elements of the Star Wars Universe. It will continue to evolve and develop but still retain it mystery as we get more Star Wars stories.
