review 1: This is a book with a fine line of censure running through its veneer, where you can take one step back and observe the mixed results of a sea voyage to bring back a couple of ‘savages’, plus weapons and artefacts, to ‘display’ on the roof of the tallest building in 1890’s Chicago: Chicago First Equitable. The voyage and the detail in Chicago is top-notch reading: rich with eye-popping, presumably accurate, vividly seething detail. The weather, the wildlife, the natives, the life at sea; the growing city of Chicago itself – all becomes the sensory tapestry of this book. It is rare to find a page without more historical detail. And yet Smith has written the account seamlessly, so you read and digest without thinking you’re reading a history text. Above all, th... moree theme of being true to oneself and family (whether tribal or civilized) rub side by side with the misery that greed and ignorance can produce. A majestic tale, with a message of morality.
review 2: I really loved this book! It truly lived up to it's title and took me to "Bright and Distant Shores". It is so different and full of adventure! Not only did I not know much about Chicago in the 1890's or the islands of the South Pacific, I couldn't imagine how those two locales could possibly be part of the same story. But, in a magical way Dominic Smith manages it and spins a great yarn of exploration in directions both upward and outward. From the worlds highest sky scrapers to the world's most unexplored islands, this is a story about man's desire to reach new frontiers. It is also about human curiosity and greed. Great characters--real and fictious--you'll love it! less
