My Least Favourite Books Of The Year – 2017

I’m not quite ready to do my favourite books of the year yet, so let’s get in the anti-holiday spirit and do my least favourite books of the year! As much as you don’t want to admit it, I know that you all secretly love to hate on books sometimes, and I do too! So let’s get started!

P.S these aren’t in any particular order of dislike.

1. Turtles All The Way Down by John Green

Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.

Maybe it’s unfair of me to put a book on this list that I haven’t actually finished, but oh well. I can see why some people might find this book relatable because of the representation of Anxiety and OCD, but I just found it a big pile of messy nothing. I’m over halfway through the book and the plot is basically nonexistent. We have this weak little mixture of this missing billionaire which is mostly a side plot to keep the story moving, which it’s not. Maybe the last one hundred pages will give us some character development or some interesting story, but I doubt it.

2. Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi (Book 2 in the Shatter Me Trilogy)

Tahereh Mafi’s 2013 book Unravel Me is the second book in her popular Shatter Me trilogy. Because of the fact that this book is a sequel, I can’t give you a summary without spoiling the first book. But if you would like to read my review of Shatter Me you can click here.

If I had read this trilogy when I was younger I might have loved it, but at 20 years old it’s so painfully bad. Shatter Me was meh, but Unravel me was just well, I don’t even know. I can practically feel my frustration dripping from my review of Unravel Me, is that unprofessional? This book for me was just a whole lot of nothing and you can read my full angry rant by clicking here.

3. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

A beautiful and distinguished family. A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy. A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive. A revolution. An accident. A secret. Lies upon lies. True love. The truth.

This post is probably offending a lot of people (sorry), but here we go again. If I had a dollar for every time I heard that We Were Liars was a good book, well you know, I’d be rich. I read it a while ago so let me try to remember exactly what I hated about it. First, the writing is saturated with unnecessary and pretentious metaphor’s and I CAN’T STAND IT. Second, the mystery was slightly interesting but the ending was not enough to make up for the completely boring story that I couldn’t wait to finish. I feel like this book was designed to be this great masterpiece. But it came out like a masterpiece that was thrown out a window, driven over, and drowned until it was nothing but hopeful.

4. The Ancient Evil by Christopher Pike (Book 2 in the Chain Letter duology)

I can’t give a synopsis as it is a sequel, but here’s the one for the first book. One by one, the chain letter was coming to each of them … demanding dangerous, impossible deeds… threatening violence if the demands were not met. No one out of the seven wanted to believe that this nightmare was really happening to them. Until the accidents started happening — and the dying.

Chain Letter was interesting, it wasn’t amazing but good enough for me to read the second one, but The Ancient Evil, omg what is happening. Christopher Pike writes some weird and sometimes terrible stuff, his works are really hit and miss, and this missed. Firstly, TONY MADE ME SO ANGRY, I wrote a Goodreads post just about how he was the worst character ever written and that I had never been angrier at a book in my entire life. (I was really angry). I’m not really sure what even happened in the book or why Tony was so bad, it’s like my entire memory of the book disappeared because I hated it so much. From what I remember the plot and characters where just a complete mess and this sequel should never have happened.

I apologize if I offended your favourite book but in the end, it’s all just fun and angry opinions that I have. Let me know what books you disliked this year!
