Corey Rosen Schwartz is the author of a fun series of funny fairy tales about martial arts trained farm animals.
I read The Three Ninja Pigs to second grade each year. The pigs learn that you have to commit all the way to training if you want to defeat the wolf. They end up opening their own dojo.
I added Ninja a Red Riding Hood to my collection last year and again, and this time, the wolf has a black belt.
The newest book, Hensel and Gretel, Ninja Chicks, just came last week. The chicks save their parents from the fox, thanks to their diligent training.
I like these books a lot. They rhyme, and the kids like the rhythm of rhyming books a lot. They also teach about learning a skill for defense, not offense. They cover more than one kind of martial arts too, which is nice in a town where we don’t have access to all the different kinds. I’m hoping for more books in the future, maybe Goldilocks or Jack and the Beanstalk.
