The first in a magical, exciting series by Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill. Perfect for fans of Rainbow Magic and My Little Pony!

What if you had a special bracelet that gave you the power to talk to animals?

One morning Evie gets a parcel in the post from her Grandma Iris in Jamaica. Inside layers of tissue and colourful ribbons is a beautiful bracelet!

Evie’s going to need the bracelet – and a brave heart – when her friend meets a frightened silver unicorn. But she’s always ready to have some magical adventures!

This is the first in a sensational seven-book series by Jessica Ennis-Hill, World Book Day ambassador and inspiration for kids everywhere.

This is a sweetly enjoyable tale which mixes magic and animals in a fun way. The illustrations are cute and should help less confident readers and the characters all seem pretty nice.

Evie is a normal, everyday kind of girl who likes animals, is frequently annoyed by her baby sister and is worried about starting a new school. The magic bracelet comes with a mysterious riddle and no real instructions, so Evie gets plenty of surprises throughout.

It’s a quick and easy read, but it did feel slightly lacking in spark for me. The sprites and unicorn don’t feel as though they fit in with the rest of the story, and I imagined something more exciting happening when she found out she could talk to animals. Her friendship woes were also a bit too straightforward for me. I know I’m not the target audience and I’m pretty sure there will be plenty of young girls who adore this series, but I personally prefer things like Star Friends or anything by Holly Webb, which offer a little more depth around the magic.

Still, if you have an animal loving young reader in your life who is looking for a new series and enjoys a bit of magic, then I’m sure this will be a good one to try.

The Silver Unicorn is Out Now.
