review 1: Essex County is an absolute masterpiece. Visually stunning, engaging, and deeply, deeply moving. This is a story of love and loss through generations which weave themselves against a harsh landscape that comes to consume and define them.I live in Canada but am not much of a fan of Canadian literature (I think Margaret Atwood is my least favorite writer). But much like the brilliant Scott Pilgrim series, I have finally found something Canadian that I love. Lemire's heartbreaking novel should be counted as classic.
review 2: Jeff Lemire's Essex County collection is an odd mix of minimalism and surrealism that create a strong whole. The story revolves around a single family in an alternate version of Canada's most southern county who are always caught in the tail... morewind of tragedy. Despite the heavy plot points, the book mainly focuses on the day to day life of each character which allows the reader to identify with the subjects. The first three stories in the collection are well-developed, however the final two (Boxing Club and Elephant) seem unfinished. This is a great entry point for those who would enjoy literary graphic novels. less
