The Bone Dragon – Alexia Casale

Amazon | Goodreads

3/5 Dragons

What is it about?

Evie is a 14-year-old girl with a horrifying past. She was adopted 3 years ago, and it has taken her that long to confess to her adoptive parents that she’s been living with broken ribs for the last 4 years. Her Uncle Ben helps her carve a piece of a rib the doctors removed into a dragon which she wishes would come to life and help her be strong.

Is it good?

It was okay, but it was a little boring. It’s mostly Evie going about her everyday life. Going to school, eating dinner, doing homework, and spending time with her friends. And it bothered me that Evie keeps herself distant from everyone and doesn’t share her past with anyone. including the reader who is in her mind. Even her nighttime adventures with the dragon lacked excitement.

I would not qualify this as a fantasy book. There is a dragon, but it’s carved out of bone, but nothing truly mystical happens. I think this book is better categorized as young adult, or general fiction.
