Once upon a time, there was a girl who stopped believing in fairy tales after her innocence was stolen.
Morgan Myers is tired. So damn tired. Most people either push her around or brush her off, and she’s not putting up with it anymore. Determined to reclaim the life that had been stolen from her, she puts her trust in the last person she ever expected to: the notorious they call Scar. Morgan sees a side of him that few people seem to know—the man, not the myth. Lorenzo. And what she sees, she likes, a lot more than she thought she would.
But fairy tales aren’t real, as life likes to remind her. Some dragons, you just can’t slay, no matter how hard you fight them. And when hers comes back around, breathing fire, she’s forced to face some unimaginable horrors. But there’s a white knight in combat boots out there that isn’t afraid of monsters.
You see, it’s impossible to be afraid of something you see every day in the mirror.
MY RATING:
Think about your typical good guy. He’s sweet, maybe a little brooding, and goes to his respectable job everyday. The typical good guy is a fairytale, and Lorenzo Gambini is the very opposite of your fairytale. Morgan Meyers? She’s just as unconventional.
Grievous, the second book in the Scarlet Scars series centers around Lorenzo, the disabled anti-hero and Morgan Meyers (aka Scarlet) as the two take on the Russian mob in order to take back something that Morgan cannot fathom living without. As can be imagined, the journey is difficult and scary; yet, it is completely captivating. Plans are made and destroyed, allies are tested, and violence is expected. If you like books with anti heroes, suspense, and strong female characters that just need a break, Grievous might be the book for you!
Not only is the action exciting, but the dark romance is beautiful to watch unfold. Both Lorenzo and Morgan are untrusting. For them romance is out of the question because of the walls they have up; however as they spend more time together, they grow to be the only people who can speak truthfully to one another. I enjoyed reading how adorable Lorenzo unknowingly was around Morgan, and how Morgan seemed to brighten when she was with Lorenzo.
- Lorenzo’s disability not just being a feature but something he struggles with; yet, will not let define him!
- Mention of Ignazio Vitale (A character from J.M. Darhower’s Monster in His Eyes).
- FOCUS ON MORGAN BELONGING TO HERSELF !!!!
- The last chapter (literally full of everything sunshine and rainbows)
- All things mobster action
Overall, I think that the action and strategies are what drew me the most to this book. Lorenzo and Morgan are a force to reckon with that I hope to see more of later in J.M Darhower’s books.
