Review:

Freya Braithwaite knows she is lucky. Nineteen years of marriage to a man who still warms her soul and two beautiful teenage daughters to show for it: confident Charlotte and thoughtful Lexi. Her home is filled with love and laughter.

But when Lexi’s struggles with weight take control of her life, everything Freya once took for granted falls apart, leaving the whole family with a sense of helplessness that can only be confronted with understanding, unity and, above all, love.

In this compelling and heart-wrenching new work by bestselling author Amanda Prowse, one ordinary family tackles unexpected difficulties and discovers that love can find its way through life’s darkest moments.

I was quite hesitant to read this book as it’s not the genre I’d usually reach out for and to be honest I didn’t really think it would be my thing. I cannot stress enough how glad I am to have read it now, just couldn’t put it down! It was such an informative and eye-opening topic to read about, good to get an insight into an illness such as anorexia through fictional characters. I have gained a huge understanding of something which before reading The Food of Love I knew little about.

I don’t think I realised the seriousness or the colossal impact these mental illnesses can have on people and everybody close to them. The storyline moved me and made me quite emotional, it was such a shame to watch anorexia completely take over a young girl’s life, precious time that the family will never get back. I even shed a tear at the end, which is very rare for me!!

Amanda Prowse handled the tragic, sensitive and emotional topic beautifully. I cannot wait to read more by this incredibly talented author. The Food of Love is such an important book, I think everybody should read it, especially mothers.
