The Friday 56: Stranger

Yay, it’s Friday!

The Friday 56 is a weekly blog meme hosted by Freda’s Voice. The idea is to share an excerpt from a book you’ve been reading every Friday, to promote the book or simply just to showcase your current read!

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
(If you have to improvise, that’s OK.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.
*It’s that simple

I’ve been busy this week so I’m still reading Invictus (which is amazing), but I did also start Stranger by David Bergen. This week’s quote is from Stranger, which is about a young Guatemalan woman who must enter the US illegally to find her child after they are stolen away from her.

She fell asleep.
And woke to the sound of the couple fighting about the shoes. At first she believed it was a dream, and then she was awake, and the man was shouting that they were not his shoes, he’d never seen them before, and if they weren’t his, where had they come from? The woman said that he was drunk and that he had probably bought the shoes in Pastores and forgotten that fact. The man said that he’d never been to Pastores in his life.

I was wary going into this novel because it isn’t own voices, but so far it seems respectful of Guatemalan culture so I’m going to stick with it and see where it goes.

What have you been reading this week? Have you read anything by David Bergen, and if so what did you think? Let me know in the comments!
