review 1: Ever wondered what history would be like if things were flipped over? Well, here's your answer. A world in which there exists a United Arab States and the Eastern Seaboard of North America is a country of Christian fundamentalists who, on November 9th, 2001, hijack 4 airplanes and crash two of them into the Tigris and Euphrates World Trade Towers in Baghdad. This book gives one the experience of an alternate reality that, to most, seems unimaginable.
review 2: What if the universe we live in is but one alternative world, one possibility that may or may not involve the same players on the world’s political scene but in slightly or dramatically altered roles? Matt Ruff explores this concept in “The Mirage” which is based on the premise that the 9/11 attac
... moreks by fundamentalist Muslims on the United States might as easily have been an 11/9 attack on Baghad by fundamentalist Christian terrorists. It took me 60 pages or so to really dig in to Ruff's vision of a different world. And at first, this made me very impatient and, in fact, I put the book away for a couple of years before giving it a second try. Wading through the early stages which are mostly a re-imagining of the 9/11 attacks, my thought was "why bother ~ this is simply a reiteration of history only in reverse." But, if you can make it through the first 60 pages, this fantasy (or is it?) will keep you intrigued, puzzled, and pensive right up to the last word. Ruff’s writing is intelligent, carefully researched and exhilarating to read. Poof! less
