review 1: A wonderful collection of short stories that revolve around different Hawaiian women who represent many different islands, occupations, and social circumstances. As someone who grew up in Hawaii, I found the author's use of pidgin dialogue quite accessible, but mainlanders may have more of a struggle to acclimate. The author clearly has an ear not just for dialogue but for the diverse and unique pastimes, enthusiasms and customs of Hawaiian island life.
review 2: I am so glad someone in my book club recommended this book to us. It contains three short stories, all by the same author. Each of the stories takes place in a different setting, each unique to the islands we know as Paradise. All three stories are very different one from another. What they have in com... moremon is the way they explore struggles and yearnings that are common to all people, everywhere. The author has a talent for reaching deep within the characters and laying them bare for the reader, while at the same time painting the unique landscapes of the islands as clearly as any artist could with a brush and paint. This is one of those books that becomes a part of you and stays with you long after you’ve finished the last page. No one will read it without being touched and changed in some way. less
