What to Say Next, by Julie Buxbaum

Hey guys! My mom heard about this cool new book called What to Say Next, by Julie Buxbaum. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t stop reading it! I read it in two days. It is now one of my favorite books, I loved it so much! There is some mature content in it, but it is appropriate for 8th grade and up. This novel talks about grief, mental illness, and many other modern social issues, and it addresses them beautifully. Before the start of the novel, Kit, the main character, has her father die in a tragic car accident. The start of the novel is one of her first days back at school after the accident. She decides not to sit with her friends at lunch and instead sits with the “weird kid”, David.  Kit and David end up talking and becoming really good friends, and the bulk of the novel is about their relationship, and that people mock Kit for being friends with David.

I really loved this book. I related to both of the characters, not in a big way, but in a subtle way, and really liked them. I also liked that even when Kit wasn’t sitting with her friends at lunch, they were still always on her side for the whole book. If I were you guys, I would DEFINITELY try to get this book and read it ASAP! Happy reading!
