Why travel alone? Slovenia, Bled, Dec 2017

Even though I was brought up as a single spoilt brat and used to my own territory, London took it away from me for 11 years. I shared a 3 bedroom house with 10 people, then a room with 2 other people, then a flat with 6 including 3 years of sharing a bed with another girl.

It teaches you patience and understanding, but the desire to have your own space and privacy was always strong. So, even now, when my work includes solitary travel, I try to get away for a few days to be only with myself.

This year I went to Slovenia, and specifically to Bled. Why Bled? Because I found this picture.

 Why travel alone?

Travel can have different purposes. It can be liberating, relaxing, intoxicating, life-changing, inspiring, hard, it can bring you calm or understanding, or a different perception of reality. This is why I get surprised when questioned on my often adventurous and painful choices of travel (mountains, altitude and marathon running): it depends on how you feel and what you want to accomplish at that moment.

Slovenia was an exercise in self-reflection, a look in the mirror, a quick analysis of the year and an orienteering exercise for 2018. I didn’t need activities, or climbing, or entertainment, or meeting people. Just calm, quite, safety and a good view.

And it delivered precisely that…

…and a great bonus of amazing food:
