review 1: Beautifully language used to describe a horrendous thing. I read because it's consistently rated as one of the best books of the 20th century, and the beginning of the book gave me great hope. But, in the end, I found it repetitive and I finished it just because I felt I should. Many reviewers say that this is a love story, or will make us empathize with the narrator. I disagree completely. This is a book about a narcissistic pedophile who kidnaps and rapes a young child for years essentially ruining her life. I never once felt "sorry" for HH. Lastly, i don't understand why society has used the work "Lolita" to describe a sexually precocious young girl when it's fairly clear that she does not enjoy the life HH has chosen for her and is also described as "sexually repressed... more" by her school. It's unfortunate that Lolita's name has come to represent something that she was not, making her a victim yet again!
review 2: Lolita! This book is beautifully sad. This book is like a memoir of slavery as narrated by the slave master. Lolita's feelings and point-of-view are silenced and ignored like she's nothing; but she's a human and even sadder just a child. This leaves the reader to feel the destruction she's doomed for even though she speaks it not while pedophilia-stricken H.H is convinced he did it all for the love of Lolita. The Lolita given to us is Humbert's creation, the delusions and insanity of H.H might lead one to admit that there is more to that child than we've been told; the most intriguing aspect of this book being that we'll never know. less
