I didn’t originally plan to review this book on my blog, but my friends discovered I was reading it and made a formal request. So what could I say?
This book tells the story of three teenagers (Wink, Poppy, and Midnight,) who are all swept up in a fairytale of someone’s creation. This book is interesting because it is neither fully a fantasy novel or a contemporary novel, but rather something else entirely of the author’s creation.
Things I liked about this book:
I really enjoyed the way that the story was laid out, plot wise, but also in the narration. As there are three main characters, there are also three points of view. The author jumps back and forth to tell you different aspects of the narrative in relation to those different characters. This provides a very rich and detailed story-telling that I’ve found in few other places. When you pair this with the dreamy, fairytale writing style, you have something like a cross between The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black and We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.
Things I didn’t like about this book:
I read some reviews from other people where they mentioned how hard it was to like these characters. I, personally, think this added to the story, but I’m mentioning it for people possibly interested in reading it. I enjoyed this novel very much, and there wasn’t anything I found to be lacking.
I had never read anything by April Genevieve Tucholke before this, and now I’m interested to read some of her other works. So, if you’ve read some – let me know in the comments below what you recommend!
