review 1: well conceived and executed. Perhaps similar attachments have been to Jane Austen and to her characters. I confess to being much more familiar with Austen than Eliot but it was very satisfying to read about her life with her husband. I was surprised to learn she married so quickly after his death. I won't say she 'married again' because technically that would be incorrect. They seemed like a remarkable pair and it was a bit out of character that Eliot felt the need to 'remarry' in the fashion that her heroine, Dorothea Brooke, did. I have not read Middlemarch and frankly the book's plot does not call out to me the way Miss Austen's novels do. We are all a bit jealous of our favorite novelists and try to protect their reputations. Still, I derived a lot of pleasure reading ... moreMiss Mead's honest and heartfelt account of her lifelong acquaintance with Middlemarch and I envy her relationship with it. I don't think any serious reader would be disappointed with it.
review 2: I like the George Eliot novel and Mead has an interesting way of commenting on the book, the author's life, and her own life. I wasn't sure I liked the book at first but I liked it more and more as I kept reading. Mary Ann Evans( George Eliot) was a fascinating woman of her time and I learned more about her and the men who were around her. I've read a novel based on her late marriage that is also good.I taught Silas Marner to high school students years ago. I believe it was a shortened version much like Mead decries for Mill on the Floss. It did get students to read a classic and I hope some of them read the entire novel later. less

Rebecca Mead writes about it so eloquently that I really, really want to re-read Middlemarch now!

Part critical literary essay, part biography, part memoir, wholly wonderful.
