review 1: More Than A Maid is the third book in the Barboza Brothers series by Reeni Austin. Like the others, it is one of those books you just can’t stop reading until you finally finish. I hate to leave the characters and hope they do appear in other books by her. Ramon Barboza is running three ranches and works all the time with very little sleep. He refuses help from his brothers and refuses to disclose information about the ranches. He got the main ranch from Henry who had brought the boys to the United States from Mexico and raised them on his ranch. He purchased the Perry farm from Mrs. Perry after her husband’s death and she was threatened with foreclosure. The third was purchased before foreclosure as well. Ramon is blunt and tells it like it is. He doesn’t w... moreant his brothers and their wives here much less everyone else. The only one he really gets along with is his nephew Isaac. The other boys feel that Ramon is keeping something from them and want to know what it is. However, with their weddings, it is a while before they confront him. What is the secret he knows? How will it affect them? Marcy is a friend of Cara’s. She owns a office cleaning business in New Jersey. However, with other cleaning companies coming into the area which can provide services she can’t, her business is taking a hard hit. She takes Patty, Cara’s mother, and Victor, Cara’s fiancé, up on coming to Texas to clean for the Barbozas while they stay at Ramon’s. She and Ramon immediately like each other and begin an affair which consumes both of them and yet is the basis of many arguments between them. Will they get together or will Ramon’s past cause them to break up?
review 2: This was not a great book. Ramon was tough to like and root for even when he was supposedly vulnerable. Marcy was shallow and hypocritical. They just didn't work as a couple. Also, i was very distracted by this author's overuse of variations of the word smirk. Almost every page had Ramon or someone else smirking or being smirked at. For the love of god, use a thesaurus! I paid for this book, but I couldn't wait to get to the end. I usually hate to see a book end, but this wasn't one of them. It certainly wasn't the worst book, but I'd never reread it. less
