review 1: There was positives and negatives with this book. As historical fiction, it was fascinating. I knew nothing about the aftermath of the Second World War. I had no idea about the requisitioning of houses by the British in German cities, nor about the process of 'clearing' Germans of political suspicion. So that aspect of this book was really good. But it was unevenly weighted - too much book at the beginning, and it all ended far too abruptly at the end. The romantic aspect was started and finished in a bizarrely quick time and the ending was unsatisfactory. It was also seriously over-written, with the use of far too many obscure words where a simple word would have worked just as well.
review 2: The book is written from the viewpoints of a number of different ch
... morearacters and there are a number of parallel stories. This is difficult to pull off successfully. I suspect you ned a really grand theme to do it well - middlemarch, war and peace, life and fate etc. without a central character with which to identify, the book suffers from a somewhat scattergun approach to the story, making hard to get really absorbed. On the good side, the situation is a very interesting one, and the British occupation of Germany is not often, if ever, written about from in fiction. Sometimes the research surfaces in a slightly obvious way, but in general the evocation of the time and setting feels pretty authentic. Other reviews have complained about one or two phrases that weren't around at the time being used, but this didn't bother me at all. I didn't notice it. less
