review 1: Weaves a lush tapestry of sounds, each nuanced and distinct. Sound almost becomes a character, and the descriptions of and deliniations among sounds were the most compelling aspect of this novel for me. The plot moves along at a suprisingly moderate pace, normally when the details are this rich the action slogs along with heaves and groans, a mere afterthought to the process of description. The main character is born and raised in the top of a bell tower, his mother a deaf mute. But the power of the bells amplifies rather than stunts his hearing capabilities, and thus begins his adventures and misadventures in the world, his musical talents a blessing and a curse throughout the course of his life.
review 2: This book earns 4 stars and not 5 only because the end
... moreing felt so rushed and I wanted to experience more of Moses' climb to fame and glory. Indeed, I feel like all of the synopses I have read are truly misleading, because they all hint that the reader follows Moses across Europe as he sings in the most famous opera houses, when in fact the book ends before we get to see this illustrious career. I would have gladly stayed in Moses' world for another 200+ pages to hear the rest of the story. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's hard for me to pinpoint what was so great about it, which tells me I must have liked it a great deal. The figure of the castrato is so mysterious and intriguing, and a topic I have yet to read about in literature. The characters in this book are wonderful, my personal favorite being Nicolai, the jolly and often drunk monk who serves as a father figure to Moses. I swear, just about every mention of him brought a smile to my face- he was positively delightful. The tale is a sweeping love story- of both Moses and his lady and Moses and his music. I have often seen this book compared to Perfume for its ability to arouse the senses. I enjoyed this book a great deal more than perfume: the characters are flawed, but so wonderful, while I simply hated the characters in Perfume. In any case, READ THIS BOOK. less

Tragic romance. Too much castration, and fornication for my taste.

Decent read, especially if you are into historical fiction.
