review 1: This book held my interest, and it was very good historical fiction, but I felt it was not like most other Christian fiction I have read; it was kind of sad in many ways, not uplifting. Eliza and her husband have many problems, and both of them seem kind of self-centered at times. Set in both England and the United States, it does give a great feel for what it would have been like to live during the American Revolution, but I don't think the Morgans in this story were typical of the behavior of most couples. The theme of forgiveness was very prevalent, and I would agree that we are all sinful at times, but things didn't work out the way I expected. Haywood was extremely unpredictable in his behavior in portions of the story, and he changed so much it was almost unbelievable... more at times. I did like it enough to continue reading the series.
review 2: Liked the beginning. Hated the ending. Too sad to read it again.I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. The author's descriptions of River Run and the new world were so vivid. There was also so much potential for a sweet Christian romance. I knew there would be struggles and hardships for them to face in their marriage and in America, but it didn't seem like there was anything good to balance it out. I stopped liking the book about halfway in.The characters were just ok. I admired Eliza's strength and faith and just wish that she could have caught a break. Fiona was my favorite character. She was so loyal and kind. I liked Hayward in the beginning, too. He had so much room to change and grow as a man. He did grow... but into a horrible, vindictive, cruel and evil man.The ending was terrible. There was very little to look forward to when reading. One bad thing after another happened and I just wanted the book to end. This book was more of a drama than a romance. It left me feeling empty and sad. I understand that there is more to the series but I just can't bring myself to read them. less
