review 1: I'm becoming obsessed with ancient military history and for some reason my heart keeps falling on the side of known defeated cultures. Even still though the victory at Cannae is as impressive a feat as one can find on any battlefield that has taken place on this planet. This book explains in detail what happened on not just that day but how that battle effectively changed the world for not only Carthage but Rome and eventually propelled itself into the minds of modern German commanders to American generals leading conflicts in World War 2 and in the Persian Gulf.It is an easy read filled with great information and I recommend it for everyone.
review 2: This book provides a rather enjoyable and highly readable narrative for people who are new to the subject of t
... morehe Punic Wars. However, it also provides some very interesting insights to people who are more versed in the subject.Having said that, this book is not a general history book, but rather more focused on the military aspect of the Punic Wars. Thus the author devotes numerous pages to analyzing the military tactics used by Hannibal and Scipio Africanus during the various battles and journeys. I found the description of Hannibal's journey through the Alps to Italy most enjoyable and engaging.Overall, I can highly recommend this book to anyone with even a slight interest in Roman history. And I can recommend it even more to military history buffs, who will enjoy this book even more. less

I boggles my mind how many times the ancients escaped under the cover of darkness.
