review 1: Macfarlane writes in the naturalist tradition as he travels "old ways" around Great Britain. Very poetic, somewhat informative. I have to say I had to put it down a few times and think "why am I reading this again?" But,given it's a topic that doesn't light a fire under me, I thought the author did a good job of keeping the narrative thread moving and reviewing the scientific aspects without bogging things down.
review 2: I loved bits of this book, it's beautifully written and there are some deeply moving sections, I liked the incredibly personal nature of some of his walks and the dramatic, life threatening quality of others. However, there are a vast amount of boring bits which you have to slog through to get to the good bits. I was curious so I'm glad I fin... moreished and didn't give up but it feels like an achievement to have finished this book rather than a pleasure. On a brighter note I will never ever read an Edward Thomas poem in the same way again. less
