review 1: Macfarlane writes in the naturalist tradition as he travels "old ways" around Great Britain. Very poetic, somewhat informative. I have to say I had to put it down a few times and think "why am I reading this again?" But,given it's a topic that doesn't light a fire under me, I thought the author did a good job of keeping the narrative thread moving and reviewing the scientific aspects without bogging things down.
review 2: I loved bits of this book, it's beautifully written and there are some deeply moving sections, I liked the incredibly personal nature of some of his walks and the dramatic, life threatening quality of others. ... moreished and didn't give up but it feels like an achievement to have finished this book rather than a pleasure. On a brighter note I will never ever read an Edward Thomas poem in the same way again. less
