review 1: Based on incredible books like "The Commitments," "Paddy Clark--Ha, Ha, Ha," and "Paula Spencer," Roddy Doyle is hands-down one of my favorite living writers, but this one--in which he brings back some of the main characters from "The Commitments" as they reach middle age--just doesn't work for me. It feels like it was somebody else's idea (his publisher's, maybe?) and Doyle's heart just isn't in it. It feels forced and formulaic from start to finish. But hey, even Michael Jordan had his off-nights, right?
review 2: Great characters. I had not read Roddy Doyle's work before but I'm a huge fan of the film "The Commitments". So I welcome the idea of revisiting with this crew now that they are middle-aged, as am I. I love Jimmy's passion for music, his love for
... more his family, and his very real human emotions. However, I have trouble reading so much of the novel as dialog. And, though I love the flowing lilt of the English language as spoken by the people of Ireland, it was hard to decifer at times. less

I love Roddy Doyle so much. If I could write like anyone, I'd choose him.
